چکیده

This study describes new transport estimates of the North Atlantic Current in Iceland Basin, and uses these results along with other contemporaneous measurements to determine mass overturning budgets for eastern subpolar gyre. As part Overturning Subpolar Program (OSNAP), are determined using three full-depth dynamic height moorings spanning Basin supplemented by Argo satellite altimetry data. Along historical exchanges over Iceland-Scotland Ridge, additional OSNAP from Rockall Trough Rockall-Hatton Bank regions used calculate different density layers a broad portion Results show that 13–14 Sv (σθ < 27.8 kg m−3) flow northward into middle through primary baroclinic near 23.5°W secondary quasi-barotropic 26°W. Sensitivity of North Atlantic subpolar gyre and overturning to stratification-dependent mixing: response to global warming

We use a reduced complexity climate model with a three-dimensional ocean component and realistic topography to investigate the effect of stratificationdependent mixing on the sensitivity of the North Atlantic subpolar gyre (SPG), and the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC), to idealized CO2 increase and peaking scenarios. The vertical diffusivity of the ocean interior is paramete...

The 8.2 ka event: Abrupt transition of the subpolar gyre toward a modern North Atlantic circulation

[1] Climate model simulations of the 8.2 ka event show an abrupt strengthening of the Atlantic subpolar gyre that allows us to connect two major but apparently contradictory climate events of the early Holocene: the freshwater outburst from proglacial lakes and the onset of Labrador Sea water formation. The 8.2 ka event is the largest climatic signal of our present interglacial with a widesprea...

The 8.2k event: abrupt transition of the subpolar gyre towards a modern North Atlantic circulation

This Supplement is organized as follows: The climate model is described in detail in section 1. Section 2 discusses the robustness of multiple subpolar gyre (SPG) modes by presenting findings from several climate models. Section 3 continues this discussion summarizing work on the sensitivity of the SPG primarily in CLIMBER3α. This is followed by figures supporting conclusions in the main text a...

Decline of subpolar North Atlantic circulation during the 1990s.

Observations of sea surface height reveal that substantial changes have occurred over the past decade in the mid- to high-latitude North Atlantic Ocean. TOPEX/Poseidon altimeter data show that subpolar sea surface height increased during the 1990s, and the geostrophic velocity derived from altimeter data exhibits declining subpolar gyre circulation. Combining the data from earlier satellites, w...

Dissolved Organic Carbon in the North Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation

The quantitative role of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) export is evaluated by combining DOC measurements with observed water mass transports. In the eastern subpolar North Atlantic, both upper and lower limbs of the AMOC transport high-DOC waters. Deep water formation that connects the two limbs of the AMOC results in a high downward ex...
